Prediksi Milunovich merujuk pada sejumlah komentar Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Apple, Tim Cook, mengenai AR, sebagai bukti bahwa perusahaan itu sedang mengerjakan sesuatu yang besar.
“Tim Cook telah berulang kali buka suara mengenai produk masa depan yang berhubungan dengan AR,” tulis Milunovich dalam laporan risetnya, seperti dikutip dari Business Insider, Jumat (3/3/2017).
Dalam laporan yang sama, ia menyebutkan bahwa sejumlah sumber industri mengatakan bahwa Apple memiliki lebih dari seribu engineer yang mengerjakan sebuah proyek di Israel yang berkaitan dengan AR. Apple juga membuat sejumlah akuisisi terkait hal tersebut, termasuk PrimeSense, Metaio, dan RealFace.
Milunovich juga mencatat Apple tampak lebih tertarik dalam bidang AR ketimbang Virtual Reality (VR). Pasalnya, AR dinilai dapat menghubungkan orang-orang, sedangkan penggunaan VR dibatasi dengan headset yang membuat penggunanya tidak terhubung langsung dengan dunia nyata.
UBS memperkirakan Apple akan mengimplementasikan berbagai produk AR baru, secepatnya di iPhone terbaru pada tahun ini. Beberapa diantaranya adalah pemetaan 3D dan kemungkinkan seperangkat software AR.
